Development and Interplay of Two Orthogonal Fault Systems in the NW Qaidam Basin, Northern Tibetan Plateau

چکیده

How fold and thrust belts (FTBs) evolve over time space in a transpressional regime remains poorly understood. Based on high-resolution 3D seismic reflection data remote sensing images, we herein present detailed structural analysis of the Cenozoic faults NW margin Qaidam Basin that is bounded to north by left-reverse Altyn Tagh fault system. Two sets orthogonal, basement-involved with contrasting geometries, kinematics, temporal development are identified. One set consists generally E-W-striking, N-dipping, reverse component sinistral shear. They parallel or subparallel system, led southward tilting basement, formed local unconformity between middle Miocene Shangyoushashan formation underlying strata. developed an out-of-sequence order, were mostly active during 43.8–15.3 Ma but relatively tectonic quiescence limited weak reactivation since then. The second mainly composed NNW-striking dextral shear components. approximately perpendicular intensively ∼15.3 Ma, much later than initiation E-W-striking faults. Together published results, ascribe these two orthogonal as transition from transpression left lateral slip central segment interplayed each other ways: 1) older offset younger faults, 2) curved link preexisting Our findings reveal transpressional-dominated FTBs more complicated way contractional-dominated ones, site-based case studies needed primary principles.

Oscillation of mineral compositions in Core SG-1b, western Qaidam Basin, NE Tibetan Plateau

Uplift of the Tibetan Plateau since the Late Miocene has greatly affected the nature of sediments deposited in the Qaidam Basin. However, due to the scarcity of continuously dated sediment records, we know little about how minerals responded to this uplift. In order to understand this response, we here present results from the high-resolution mineral profile from a borehole (7.3-1.6 Ma) in the ...

Diets and environments of late Cenozoic mammals in the Qaidam Basin, Tibetan Plateau Evidence from stable isotopes

The timing history and driving mechanisms of C4 expansion and Tibetan uplift are hotly debated issues. Paleoenvironmental evidence from within the Tibetan Plateau is essential to help resolve these issues. Here we report results of stable C and O isotope analyses of tooth enamel samples from a variety of late Cenozoic mammals, including deer, giraffe, horse, rhino, and elephant, from the Qaidam...

Peopling of the northern Tibetan Plateau

Early archaeological investigations on the Tibetan Plateau concluded that this harsh, high-elevation environment was successfully colonized around 30,000 years ago. Genetic studies have tended to support this view on the assumption that the uniquely evolved physiological capacities seen among modern Tibetan populations required long-term exposure to high-elevation selective pressures. Archaeolo...

Impacts of the active layer on runoff in an upland permafrost basin, northern Tibetan Plateau

The paucity of studies on permafrost runoff generation processes, especially in mountain permafrost, constrains the understanding of permafrost hydrology and prediction of hydrological responses to permafrost degradation. This study investigated runoff generation processes, in addition to the contribution of summer thaw depth, soil temperature, soil moisture, and precipitation to streamflow in ...
